List of Motor Oils That Meet LL-01

If you own a BMW built after 2002, you’ve likely seen “Longlife-01” on your oil cap or in your service manual. 

Longlife-01 or BMW-LL01 is BMW’s baseline specification for most gasoline engines from 2002 onward and older diesel engines without particulate filters (pre-DPF). 

Most oils that meet LL-01 are built around robust 5W-30 or 5W-40 formulations with high-temperature protection. These are “Full SAPS” oils, meaning they pack traditional anti-wear additives and detergents designed for maximum engine cleanliness and durability.

What Does LL-01 Oil Mean?

BMW has used several “Longlife” oil specifications over the years that are tailored to specific engine generations and emissions requirements. Longlife-98 was the original standard for pre-2002 BMWs but became obsolete in 2009. Longlife-01 replaced it as the baseline specification for most gasoline engines from 2002 onward and older diesel engines without particulate filters (pre-DPF). 

Later on, BMW rolled out new specs that serve more specialized roles: like LL-04 (for DPF-equipped diesels), LL-01 FE (fuel-economy formulations for specific N-series engines), and newer standards like LL-17 FE (low-SAPS 0W-20 for modern engines).

Longlife-01 remains BMW’s core “Upper Mainline” standard: the quality threshold your engine needs to stay protected under extended drain intervals. LL01 oils are built around robust 5W-30 or 5W-40 formulations with high-temperature protection. Newer 0w30 formulations are also available. 

Longlife-01 often overlaps with other European performance specs like Mercedes-Benz 229.5, Porsche A40, and VW 502/505. This means that LL-01 oils may also meet the standards of German performance brands.

Valvoline European Vehicle Full Synthetic 0W-30 meets various BMW Longlife ratings (including LL-01, LL-04, LL-01FE, and LL-12FE)  It is formulated specifically for European gasoline and diesel engines, particularly Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche vehicles.

The oil uses fully synthetic base oils combined with additives designed to prevent engine wear, resist breakdown at high temperatures, and minimize sludge buildup. Its 0W-30 viscosity means it flows easily in extremely cold conditions (down to -39°C) while maintaining proper thickness when the engine is hot.

Red Line 11144 0W-30 is a full-synthetic ester-based motor oil designed for passenger cars, light trucks, performance vehicles, and marine engines. It meets BMW LL-01 and works as an alternative to 5W-30 oil, particularly in colder climates.

The ester formula provides a naturally high viscosity index (166), meaning the oil maintains a thicker protective film around bearings and camshafts across temperature ranges. Pennzoil – 550042833-6PK Platinum Euro-L Full Synthetic 5W-30 Motor Oil

Pennzoil Platinum Euro-L 5W-30 is a full synthetic motor oil that people may often MISTAKE as an LL-01 equivalent. Its formulation targets engines requiring specific European approvals, particularly those needing ACEA C3 classification.

It uses a complete synthetic ester formula, which is a more advanced type of synthetic oil that offers better protection than conventional oils.

Red Line uses polyol ester (PE) base oils, the same type of synthetic used in jet engine applications. Polyol esters have high thermal stability at extreme temperatures.

Motul MTL104533 8101 0w40 X-Max

Motul 8100 X-max is engineered for powerful, large-displacement engines. Unlike modern mid-SAPS oils, X-max uses a Full SAPS formulation with traditional anti-wear additives and strong acid-neutralizing reserves. As a result, it runs cleaner than competitors with lower sulfated ash while its exceptional pour point ensures that it performs well during cold-starts.

Because Motul 8100 X-max is a Full SAPS oil, it’s designed for engines without diesel particulate filters but works with catalytic converters. It’s compatible with gasoline, diesel, LPG, CNG, and biofuels.

Can We Use Non-LL-01 Oil If We Change More Often?

Yes. Several synthetic oils are API compliant though not listed as LL-01 certified. However, their performance is not guaranteed, and in some cases, you risk voiding your warranty.

The use of conventional oil is highly discouraged because it significantly affects the engine’s life and performance.

Final Thought

There are newer, low-SAPs oils like LL-04 and LL-17 FE that are formulated to reduce buildups in diesel particulate filters (DPFs). These standards are built for newer Bimmers. 

LL-01 remains the best choice for its intended engine generation. Choosing the best oil for your engine is important as it helps you determine the life of your engine, its performance, and how well your vehicle will behave during drives.

I personally use Liqui Moly in all my German/European vehicles, so I would recommend Liqui Moly 0W-40, but keep in mind it can be very expensive.
