Cummins ISX Oil Capacity & Oil Type

The Cummins ISX engine holds between 10 and 14 U.S. gallons (38 to 53 liters) of oil, depending on the specific model and how it’s configured. An ISX15 from the EPA 2010 era is rated at 14 gallons, while 2006 to 2007 models typically fall in the 11 to 12 gallon range.

On the X15, it takes roughly 1 to 2 gallons just to move the dipstick reading from “add” to “full,” so small differences matter more than you’d expect.

The biggest factor affecting oil capacity is the oil pan depth, which depends on how the engine is installed in the chassis.

Oil Specifications for the Cummins ISX Engine

  • Viscosity: 15W-40 or 10W-30 heavy-duty engine oil. For newer engines, 10W-30 is often the better choice since it supports fuel economy and reduces ash buildup in the aftertreatment system. You can also learn more about 5w30 vs 10w30 differences for smaller utility engines.

  • API Standards: 2010 and newer engines require API CK-4 (Cummins spec CES 20086) or API FA-4 (Cummins spec CES 20087). For ISX engines built between 1998 and 2009, API CJ-4 or newer is the minimum.

  • Synthetic oil is allowed, but it does not extend your drain intervals. Follow the standard schedule regardless.

  • Additives are not recommended. Cummins engines are engineered to run on commercially available oils as-is.

Cummins ISX Engine Oil Alternatives & Equivalents

While Valvoline Premium Blue is the factory-recommended partner for Cummins, the ISX engine is designed to run on any high-quality oil that meets specific Cummins Engineering Standards (CES).

Closing Note

The capacities above are starting points, not guarantees. The actual amount your engine holds depends on the oil pan depth specified by the chassis manufacturer. A Volvo-spec’d chassis and a Kenworth-spec’d chassis running the same engine can have different capacities

10W-30 is the better choice for 2010 and newer engines. It improves fuel economy and reduces soot buildup in the aftertreatment system. That said, 15W-40 remains widely used, especially in hotter climates. Both are acceptable where Cummins lists them as options.

Even though some 2021 and newer X15 engines are approved for API FA-4 oil (CES 20087), Cummins specifically states that FA-4 is not recommended for motorhome applications.

If you notice low oil pressure at idle, investigate immediately, as these large-displacement engines require consistent lubrication.
