[1987 – 2026] Jeep Wrangler Oil Capacity and Oil Type

Both the JK and the new JL were produced the 2018 model year, and they take different oils. The JL 3.6L Pentastar uses 0W-20, while the JK 3.6L uses 5W-20. If you own a 2018 Wrangler, check your door jamb sticker to confirm which generation you have before buying oil.

For newer engines, full synthetic is required. The 2.0L Turbo, 3.0L EcoDiesel, and 6.4L HEMI all require it to maintain the factory warranty and handle the heat these engines generate. The 3.0L EcoDiesel needs a European-spec 5W-40 diesel oil that meets Chrysler standard MS-12991.

Standard synthetic oil, even a quality one, is not the right fit here. Using it can lead to turbocharger deposits and faster wear over time. For older Wranglers where 5W-30 or 10W-30 are both acceptable, the right choice depends on your climate.

5W-30 flows better in cold weather and offers good protection at high temperatures. Some mechanics also recommend 5W-30 for the JK 3.6L as a hedge against heat, even if the manual calls for a lighter weight.

Jeep Wrangler Oil Type and Capacity

Jeep recommends an oil change every 7,500 to 10,000 miles when using full synthetic. That said, if you do a lot of off-roading, tow regularly, or drive in extreme heat, treat those as “severe duty” conditions and shorten your interval to every 5,000 to 6,000 miles.

Diesel or Gasoline Motor Oil For Your Wrangler?

If you have the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 (2020–2026), you need diesel oil. Specifically, SAE 5W-40 full synthetic that meets the European-specification formula and Chrysler’s MS-12991 standard.  If you have any gasoline engine, you need gasoline-spec motor oil. Here’s what each engine takes:

  • 3.6L Pentastar V6: 0W-20 full synthetic (2018–2026 JL) or 5W-20 full synthetic (2012–2018 JK)
  • 2.0L Turbo I4: 5W-30 full synthetic, API SP/GF-6A certified

For gasoline engines, look for the API Starburst symbol on the bottle. It confirms the oil meets current gasoline engine standards. For the 2.0L Turbo specifically, verify the API SP/GF-6A certification, as this engine has tighter tolerances. When in doubt, check your owner’s manual or look at the oil fill cap on your engine. Closing Notes

The Wrangler’s oil life monitor is a helpful tool, but don’t rely on it exclusively. Change your oil at least once a year regardless of mileage, and shorten your interval to every 5,000 to 6,000 miles if you tow, off-road frequently, or drive in extreme heat. 

For JL-generation Wranglers, never go beyond 10,000 miles between changes even if the warning light hasn’t triggered. If you own a 4xe, the hybrid system runs the same 2.0L Turbo engine and follows the same 5W-30 full synthetic requirement as the standard turbocharged four-cylinder.
