5.7 Hemi Oil Capacity, Type, & Filters: Year-by-Year Guide

The 5.7L Hemi has used a 7-quart oil capacity (including the filter) since its introduction in 2003. What has changed over the years is the required viscosity, driven mainly by two systems: the Multi-Displacement System (MDS) and, more recently, the eTorque mild-hybrid.

Early 5.7L Hemi engines required 10W-30. The viscosity shifted down to 5W-20 when the MDS was introduced.

MDS and the shift to 5W-20

When Chrysler introduced the Multi-Displacement System in 2005, it brought a mandatory viscosity change. MDS solenoids use oil pressure to deactivate cylinders, and they are calibrated for 5W-20

Running a heavier oil in an MDS-equipped engine can cause the system to malfunction and trigger a check engine light.

Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks, along with manual transmission Challengers, do not have cylinder deactivation. These engines commonly spec 5W-30, which holds up better under severe-duty conditions and provides a slightly thicker oil film for the bearings.

Starting in 2022, Ram 1500 trucks with the eTorque system require 0W-20 full synthetic meeting the MS-6395 material standard. The thinner viscosity helps oil reach critical components faster during the frequent cold starts and restarts that come with mild-hybrid operation.

Always verify MS-6395 certification before buying aftermarket oil for your Hemi.

Compatible Oil Filter and Oil Change Intervals

Always replace the oil filter at every oil change. The standard manufacturer interval for modern Ram trucks (2011 and newer) running full synthetic is every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.

If your driving involves frequent short trips under 10 miles, extended idling, heavy towing, stop-and-go traffic, or off-road use, drop that to every 5,000 miles or 6 months.

Many experienced Hemi owners and mechanics recommend the 5,000-mile interval regardless, as a preventive measure against lifter wear and Hemi tick. On a brand-new engine, consider an earlier first change between 3,000 and 5,000 miles to flush out any assembly debris.

The Mopar OEM filter (MO-339) is the factory standard and a safe baseline for warranty purposes. Several aftermarket options are available.

Closing Notes

The way you handle your 5.7 Hemi matters as much as your choice of motor oil. Avoid excessive idling, don’t overfill past 6.6 quarts, and invest in a quality filter with a solid anti-drain back valve.

If you’re aiming for long-term reliability, a high-volume oil pump upgrade and strict short-interval changes during towing season will do more than switching labels.
