Petro Canada Duratran Synthetic Blend

DURATRAN XL Synthetic Blend Universal Tractor Oil

DURATRAN XL Universal Tractor Transmission Oil

Petro Canada Duratran is a premium aftermarket equivalent to Permatran III that meets Massey Ferguson specifications M-1135, M-1141, and M-1143. The standard Duratran also meets M-1145 for UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) applications, making it compatible with both older and newer Massey Ferguson equipment. This synthetic blend uses 99.9% pure HT-processed base oils with minimal viscosity index improver and an advanced additive package.
Duratran stands out because of its oxidation stability. It surpasses both the obsolete Allison C-4 oxidation test and the more demanding ABOT (Automated Bench Oxidation Test) used in automatic transmission fluid validations. This resistance to thermal breakdown extends drain intervals and reduces sludge and varnish buildup on transmission and hydraulic components. The friction modifiers control brake chatter effectively and deliver smooth clutch engagement in wet brake systems.

Permatran III Specifications

Permatran III carries the Massey Ferguson specification number M-1135. You’ll also see related spec numbers like M-1129A, M-1141, M-1119, and M-11278a listed on compatible fluids.

MF 1141 and CMS M 1141 refer to the same Massey Ferguson specification for Universal Tractor Transmission Oil (UTTO). The “CMS” prefix likely stands for an internal classification system, but M 1141 is the core identifier that matters when selecting fluids. This specification has largely been superseded by the more advanced M 1143 and M 1145 specifications, which offer improved performance and are backward compatible with M 1141 requirements.

Permatran III is used in older Massey Ferguson tractors like the MF 1250 (which holds 9 gallons for the entire system), the MF 261 with wet brakes, the MF 1635 with its 12×12 Powershuttle transmission, and the MF 240-S. Permatran III handles hydraulics, transmission, power steering, and front axle lubrication in these models.

If you’re running a vintage Ferguson like a 1954 TO30 or TO-20, the original specification was GL-1 90 weight mineral oil (MF part number M1103), which is significantly thicker than Permatran III. You can use Permatran III in these old systems if everything is in good condition, but the thinner viscosity can cause issues. You might notice increased pump noise or find that the hydraulic lift drops faster under heavy loads because the thinner fluid leaks past worn seals and clearances that the original thick GL-1 oil would seal. If you’re maintaining one of these vintage machines, tracking down proper GL-1 fluid (like NAPA part number 65-205) will give you better results than switching to the modern Permatran formulations.

Permatran III vs Permatran 821XL

Permatran III is the older standard Universal Tractor Fluid tied to specification M-1135, while Permatran 821XL is the newer semi-synthetic formulation meeting specifications M1143 and M1145, along with the AGCO/Allis Chalmers 821XL designation.
The semi-synthetic base in 821XL provides better thermal stability and improved cold-weather performance compared to the conventional Permatran III formulation. Alternative fluids that match 821XL specifications, like Chevron Synthetic All Weather THF, demonstrate these advantages through reduced startup hydraulic noise in cold weather and quicker control response when cold. This matters for operators in northern climates or anyone who starts equipment early in the morning during winter months.

Permatran 821XL is backwards compatible with systems requiring Permatran III. The newer 821XL specification encompasses the requirements of the older M-1135 spec, which is why many universal tractor fluids available at farm supply stores carry labeling for both Permatran III (M-1135) and AGCO/Allis Chalmers 821XL specifications. You can safely use 821XL in any tractor calling for Permatran III without concerns about compatibility.

One exception exists for very old Ferguson tractors like the 1954 TO30 or TO-20. These vintage machines originally specified GL-1 90 weight mineral oil (M1103), which is significantly thicker than either Permatran formulation. Permatran III was already thin enough to cause minor hydraulic issues in these old systems, like increased pump noise or faster hydraulic lift drop under load. Since 821XL is compatible with Permatran III, it presents similar challenges in those specific vintage applications where worn seals and larger clearances demand the thicker GL-1 oil. For tractors that specifically call for Permatran III in their operator’s manual, 821XL works without issue.

Closing Notes

Since M-1135 has been superseded by the more demanding M-1143 and M-1145 specifications, many budget universal tractor fluids are formulated to meet M-1135 as their baseline target. This creates a performance gap that affects your wallet differently depending on how you use your equipment.
Budget fluids meeting only M-1135 specifications typically use conventional base stocks with minimum additive packages necessary to pass the spec. You’ll save money per gallon at the register, but that savings evaporates through shortened drain intervals and increased maintenance.

The math changes based on how you work your tractor. An older MF 240-S used for light property maintenance a few hours per week can run budget M-1135 fluid without issue. The fluid never sees sustained high temperatures or continuous high-pressure operation, so it doesn’t break down quickly. You can follow standard drain intervals and the equipment stays healthy.

A frequently worked MF 1635 Powershuttle presents different demands. If you’re logging hours every week, running hydraulic attachments under load, or operating in hot weather, the superior film strength and oxidation resistance of an M-1145 synthetic blend becomes necessary regardless of what your operator’s manual specifies. The conventional M-1135 fluid will thin out faster, lose its friction modifiers sooner, and require replacement at 50 to 60% of the interval you’d get from a quality M-1145 synthetic blend.
