Honda HRX Lawnmower Oil Type, Capacity, and Equivalents

Let’s clear out one confusion first: the HRX series was originally for gas-powered walk-behind mowers. Honda discontinued the gas-powered HRX line of mowers to transition to battery operated ones that still carry the name.

For the HRX series, Honda recommends SAE 10W-30 API service category SJ or later. SJ is an API category that came out in 2001. All categories released after (SL, SM, SN, and SP) will work in your HRX lawnmower as long as you match the 10W-30 viscosity.

Monograde SAE 30 is not explicitly recommended in user manuals. But some homeowners in warmer climates prefer to use monograde oil. In terms of oil change interval, here’s a direct quote from Honda:

Change the oil after the first month or 5 hours of use. Thereafter, change the oil every 6 months or 50 hours of use. Change the oil more frequently when used under heavy load or high outdoor temperatures.

In terms of oil capacity, the GCV200 holds 13.5 oz of oil while the older GCV190 holds 17.0 oz.

Recommend Motor Oil for Honda HRX Series

The Honda HRX series uses the same oil type across its models, though capacity and refill amounts can vary slightly between older units with the GCV190 engine and newer ones with the GCV200.

Honda’s primary recommendation is SAE 10W-30 with an API service category of SJ or later. Depending on the average temperatures in your area, SAE 30 or 5W-30 are acceptable alternatives. 

Kohler Genuine Engine Oil SAE 10W-30 Synthetic Blend

If your Honda HRX mower needs an oil change, the Kohler Genuine Engine Oil SAE 10W-30 Synthetic Blend is an aftermarket-compatible option that meets Honda’s required SAE 10W-30 viscosity and API SJ or later service category.

This is a synthetic-blend oil, meaning it combines conventional and synthetic base stocks. Kohler formulates it with extra zinc additive. This helps reduce wear on internal engine parts during high-load operation like cutting thick or wet grass. It also resists thermal breakdown better than standard conventional oils.

The HRX’s GCV200 holds 13.5 oz and the GCV190 holds 17.0 oz. This comes in a 1 U.S. quart (946 mL) bottle, so one bottle covers a full fill with some left over.

STP Premium 4-Cycle Engine Oil SAE 10W-30

The STP Premium 4-Cycle Engine Oil meets the required SAE 10W-30 viscosity and API SJ service category. This synthetic-blend oil is formulated specifically for air-cooled small engines, which run hotter than water-cooled automotive engines

STP Premium uses ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) as its primary anti-wear additive, which helps protect engine components under the high-load, high-RPM conditions common in mowing. 

It also includes detergents to control sludge and carbon buildup, and corrosion inhibitors that help protect the engine during off-season storage.

The VP 4-Cycle Engine Oil explicitly lists meeting Honda’s engine specifications alongside Kawasaki and Briggs & Stratton.

This is a full synthetic oil. Full synthetics generally handle heat better and reduce oil consumption more effectively than blends. VP states it exceeds standard 10W-30 and SAE 30 performance levels and surpasses API SJ standards.

The 18 oz bottle is a practical size for the HRX’s GCV200 and gets close for the GCV190. This is a good fit for HRX owners who want a full synthetic without buying more oil than they need.

John Deere Turf-Gard SAE 10W-30 4-Cycle Engine Oil

The John Deere Turf-Gard SAE 10W-30 is a conventional motor oil that exceeds Honda’s API SJ requirement with an SN/GF-6 rating.

It is specifically formulated for outdoor power equipment. Its API SN/GF-6 rating means it meets a more current and stricter performance threshold for engine cleanliness and wear protection. It includes detergents to reduce sludge and deposit buildup, which matters in air-cooled engines that run hotter than automotive engines.

This is a conventional oil, not a synthetic blend, so it’s a straightforward, widely available option if you prefer sticking to a trusted outdoor equipment brand.

Pennzoil SAE 10W-30 Motor Oil

Pennzoil SAE 10W-30 is a compatible aftermarket option for the Honda HRX mower, meeting the required SAE 10W-30 viscosity and exceeding Honda’s minimum API SJ requirement with its API SP / ILSAC GF-6A rating.

Pennzoil’s SP rating is several generations above SJ. This formulation includes detergent additives that help prevent sludge and deposit buildup inside the engine.

Pennzoil SAE 10W-30 is a widely available, budget-friendly option for HRX owners who want a reliable conventional oil without hunting for a small-engine-specific product.

How to Change the Oil on Your Honda HRX Mower

Changing the oil on your Honda HRX is a job most owners can handle at home. You don’t need special tools or mechanical experience, just a drain container, a rag, and the right oil. 

Before you start, run the engine for a few minutes to warm it up. Warm oil drains faster and more completely than cold oil. Then shut it off: turn the fuel valve to OFF, and disconnect the spark plug cap. Both steps prevent accidental starts and fuel leaks while you work. Lay down cardboard or a drop cloth before tipping the mower.

Drain the oil. Wipe the area around the oil filler clean, then remove the filler cap and dipstick. Tilt the mower onto its right side with the fuel cap facing up so oil drains out through the filler neck into your container. 

Let it drain completely before setting the mower back down. If you’d rather not tip the mower, a siphon pump works just as well and keeps things cleaner.

Add SAE 10W-30 slowly, pour a little, wait a minute, then check the level. Stop when the dipstick reads full, not when the bottle is empty. 

Check the level by inserting the dipstick into the filler neck without screwing it in. Overfilling causes white or blue smoke from the muffler and can damage the engine. Once the level is correct, screw the cap in securely and reconnect the spark plug cap.

Honda stopped making gas-powered lawnmowers in 2023. This led to much disappointment among homeowners whose main concern is the lifespan of batteries.

Batteries get weaker constantly. Replacing a battery could end up costing as much as a brand new gas-powered mower. That being said, you’re lucky if your Honda lawnmower still runs. Protect it from weather during storage, change the oil regularly, and have tools ready for basic maintenance. That mower can last a lifetime.
