Air conditioners in vehicles contain refrigerants. A refrigerant is a chemical compound formulated to convert hot air into cold air. Like motor oil, there are several types of them. Here’s a list of Ford refrigerant capacity and oil type.

Ford Refrigerant Type

Prior to 1995, R-12 was used in Ford vehicles with air conditioning systems. This refrigerant was later replaced. 

But why was it replaced? 

R-12 was considered as being exceedingly harmful to our environment. Scientists discovered that R-12 posed a significant environmental risk and was depleting our ozone layer. As a result, people stopped using the production of R-12. However, this chemical is still available in limited quantities. But the remaining stock has an absurdly expensive price tag.

Ford’s most recent models, which date from 1994 to the present, employ R134a in their air conditioning systems. R134a was introduced as a replacement for R-12. Unlike R-12, this refrigerant has less environmental impact.

R-134a is a more effective and safer alternative to R-12. In addition, you should never mix these two different refrigerants.

Ford A/C Compressor Oil Type

Ford A/C compressors require specific types of oils. The kind of lubricant used in the A/C compressor is crucial to its performance. It’s possible that using the wrong compressor oil will cause the installed A/C compressor to fail.

Mineral oil was the preferred lubricant for older R-12 air conditioner compressors before 1995. However, when R-12 was discontinued, mineral oil was also phased out due to its inability to mix with the new R-134a refrigerant. Then a new refrigerant oil emerged as a result of the introduction of R-134a to replace R-12. One that would blend nicely with the new ozone-friendly refrigerant. Ford uses Polyalkylene Glycol (PAG) oil in their R-134a systems. PAG 46 is the most widely used PAG oil. Ford also recommends PAG 46 for its air conditioner compressors.
