[2014 - 2024] Ram EcoDiesel Oil Capacity & Oil Type - Oils Advisor

[2014 – 2024] Ram EcoDiesel Oil Capacity & Oil Type

What is the oil capacity and oil type of your Ram 1500 EcoDiesel? Youโ€™re asking this question because youโ€™ve got a Ram 1500 EcoDiesel with year make between 2014-2023.

Typically, your Ram EcoDiesel engine needs 5W-40 full synthetic oils to deliver its peak performance, and the oil capacity is 10.5 qts. However, does Ram Ecodiesel manufactured in different years have disparate oil specs?

This article focuses on the actual 2014 – 2023 Ram Ecodiesel Oil Capacity & Oil Type.

Letโ€™s dive in!

Ram EcoDiesel Overview

EcoDiesel is a 3.0L V6 turbocharged diesel engine used in most of Chrysler’s second-gen and third-gen Ram 1500s. This second-gen EcoDiesel engine features 240 horsepower with 420 lb-ft torque, and the third-gen boasts 260 horsepower and 460 lb-ft torque.

Generally, the EcoDiesel engine is praised for its excellent fuel economy and smooth performance.

Important Note

If you drive a Ram 1500 with an EcoDiesel engine, regardless of the generation, a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) from Ram indicates that you MUST wait for about 30 minutes after adding or changing the oil before starting the engine.

This wait time is to allow the oil to drain properly throughout the engine. Otherwise, you risk catastrophic engine damage. A dealership reportedly started EcoDiesel vehicles earlier than 30 minutes after adding new oil and replaced the engines due to a fatal error.

Ram EcoDiesel Oil Capacity

The EcoDiesel engine used on different Ram pickup models has different oil capacities. Hereunder are the oil capacities for 2014 – 2019 Ram EcoDiesel vehicles.

2014 Ram EcoDiesel Oil Capacity

According to the manual, your 2014 Ram EcoDiesel pickup van oil capacity is 10.5 quarts (approx. 11 liters). The recommended oil type for the 2014 Ram 1500s with EcoDiesel engine is 5W40 full synthetic. If you stick to this full synthetic oil, you don’t have to bother about oil change until after about 10,000 miles.

2015 Ram EcoDiesel Oil Capacity

The oil capacity for 2015 Ram EcoDiesel pickups is the same as the 2014 model, which is 10.5 quarts. Also, 5W40 is recommended for this Ram version. Ram recommends changing your oil along with the filter between 7,500 miles and 10,000 miles.

2016 Ram EcoDiesel Oil Capacity

For 2016 Ram pickups with EcoDiesel engines, the oil capacity is 10.6 quarts with filter. The interval between oil change is 10,000 miles as recommended by RAM. However, if you use conventional motor oils for your 2016 Ram 1500 3.0L V6, you should change the oil in 5,000 miles intervals.

2017 Ram EcoDiesel Oil Capacity

The 2017 Ram 3.0 V6 EcoDiesel model takes up to 10.6 quarts of full synthetic oils. You can actually use conventional oils for your 2017 Ram EcoDiesel engine, but that would cause shorter oil change intervals.

When you stick with 5W40 full synthetics, you will only need to worry about oil change after driving 10,000 miles. In contrast, if you use conventional oils, youโ€™ll need to change oil between 3,500 – 5,000 miles.

2018 Ram EcoDiesel Oil Capacity

There are many versions of the 2018 Ram pickup van; however, the 3.0 V6 EcoDiesel version takes 10.5 quarts of oil (with filter). Ram recommends 5W40 full synthetic oils for its 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel engines. With this oil, you will only have to bother about oil change after 10,000 miles.

2019-2023 Ram EcoDiesel Oil Capacity

Like the other ones above, the 2019 Ram 1500 with EcoDiesel engine takes 10.5 quarts of full synthetic oil. The oil change interval of the 2019 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is the same as the others; if you stick with full synthetics, an oil change should happen between 7,500 – 10,000 miles.

2024 Ram EcoDiesel

The Ram 1500 Ecodiesel has been discontinued in 2024 and will remain gone for the foreseeable future as Ram makes its move towards more EV and sustainable vehicles.

The FCA provided a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) where it is clearly stated that full synthetic 5W40 should be used for all 3.0L EcoDiesel Ram 1500s and Jeep Grand Cherokees built before 30th June 2016.

This TSB’s oil specification outrides the oil specifications in your car’s owner’s manual. 5W-40 full synthetic oils are recommended in the TSB.

So, generally, the recommended oil type for all 3.0 V6 Ram 1500s with EcoDiesel engines is 5W40 full synthetics. You can consider using either of these top best 5W40 oils. These 5W-40 EcoDiesel engine oils can meet the API CJ-4  and Chrysler MS-10902 specifications that Ram EcoDiesel 1500 requires.
