Hydro-Gear ZT-1800, ZT-2100, ZT-2200, T-Series Oil Type and Capacity

Hydro-Gear transaxles ZT-1800, ZT-2100, ZT-2200, and T-Series use 20W50 engine oil with a minimum API classification of SL. The oil should have a minimum rating of 9.0 cSt (55 SUS) at 230°F (110°C). Capacities vary by model.

Hydro-Gear specifications for larger ZT series models (2800, 3100, and up) allow anything between 15W40 and 20W50. Hydro-Gear currently recommends 15W50 synthetic motor oil for ZT drives.

Notice that these hydrostatic system use thicker oil compared to your family car. That’s because thicker oils are formulated to protect against the beating that they get operating at higher temperature and severe load. On the higher end, you’ll even find 75W-90 engine oils.

IMPORTANT FILL NOTE: These capacities are for a ‘dry’ transaxle. During a standard oil change, some oil remains inside. Do not fill to the top. The final oil level should be 0.75 inch to 1.5 inches (19-38mm) below the top of the fill port to allow for thermal expansion. Overfilling can cause oil to leak out of the breathers during use.

Recommended Oils for Mowers with Hydro-Gear Transaxles

Hydro-Gear ZT-1800, ZT-2100, ZT-2200 (EZT), T1, T2, and T3HD transaxles require SAE 20W-50 or 15W-50 motor oil, not conventional hydraulic fluid. These integrated units are designed around engine-oil lubrication to handle the heat and pressure generated during continuous mowing.

Hustler Zero Turn Lawn Mower SAE 20W-50 Hydrostatic Transmission Oil

Hustler Zero Turn SAE 20W50 Hydrostatic Oil

Hustler Zero Turn SAE 20W50 Hydrostatic Oil

Hustler Zero Turn Lawn Mower SAE 20W-50 Hydrostatic Transmission Oil is an OEM-compatible and aftermarket-equivalent fluid designed for Hydro-Gear ZT-1800, ZT-2100, ZT-2200 (EZT), T1, T2, and T3HD integrated transaxles.

This oil uses an SAE 20W-50 viscosity because Hydro-Gear light- and mid-duty ZT units are engineered around engine-oil lubrication, not conventional hydraulic fluid. The heavier viscosity maintains film strength at sustained operating temperatures above 200°F, which is critical for charge pumps, swash plates, and wheel motors that see constant load during mowing.

The formulation relies on zinc-based anti-wear additives to protect tight-tolerance components from scuffing and speed fade over time. Synthetic base oils improve resistance to shear and high-temperature thinning, helping the transaxle maintain consistent output during long run times or heavy use. While it can be mixed with other SAE 20W-50 oils in a pinch, doing so reduces the performance advantages of the formulation.

Using lighter oils or true hydraulic fluids is not suitable and can accelerate wear, increase noise, and reduce transaxle life.

Compatible applications include:

  • Hydro-Gear ZT-1800, ZT-2100, ZT-2200 (EZT)
  • Hydro-Gear T1, T2, and T3HD
  • Hustler zero-turn mowers
  • Other ZTRs specifying SAE 20W-50 API SL or higher

TRIAX Trans-Zero 20W-50

TRIAX Trans Zero 20W-50 Full Synthetic

TRIAX Trans Zero 20W-50 Full Synthetic

TRIAX Trans-Zero 20W-50 is a full synthetic hydrostatic transmission fluid formulated as an OEM-equivalent and aftermarket-compatible option for Hydro-Gear ZT-1800, ZT-2100, ZT-2200 (EZT), T1, T2, and T3HD transaxles that specify SAE 20W-50.

Trans-Zero uses a high-viscosity 20W-50 profile to maintain film strength under sustained operating temperatures commonly seen in commercial mowing. At 20.5 cSt at 100°C, it resists shear and viscosity loss, which helps preserve charge pressure, wheel motor efficiency, and consistent ground speed during long run times.

The formulation relies on a high zinc anti-wear package to protect gears, swash plates, and pump surfaces operating under heavy load and tight clearances. A full synthetic base improves oxidation resistance and thermal stability, reducing sludge formation and varnish in high-hour applications. Cold-temperature performance remains adequate for startup, with a pour point of −48°C and controlled low-temperature viscosity.

This fluid is intended only for hydrostatic transmissions requiring SAE 20W-50 or 15W-50. It is not suitable for lighter viscosities or true hydraulic fluids.

Additional compatible applications include:

  • SCAG, Toro, Exmark, Ferris, Hustler, Gravely
  • John Deere, Cub Cadet, Bad Boy, Wright
  • Other zero-turn mowers specifying SAE 20W-50

Power Performance 33006 SAE 20W-50 Hydrostatic Transmission Fluid

33006 SAE 20W-50 Hydrostatic Fluid (2-Pack)

33006 SAE 20W-50 Hydrostatic Fluid (2-Pack)

Power Performance 33006 SAE 20W-50 is an OEM-compatible and aftermarket-equivalent hydrostatic transmission fluid intended for Hydro-Gear ZT-1800, ZT-2100, ZT-2200 (EZT), T1, T2, and T3HD transaxles that specify SAE 20W-50.

Power Performance 33006 fluid uses a synthetic-blend base oil with a high-viscosity 20W-50 profile to support Hydro-Gear units that operate at sustained temperatures well above 200°F

Viscosity at operating temperature sits in the 18 to 20 cSt range at 100°C, which helps maintain charge pressure and consistent wheel motor output during extended mowing sessions. Oils that shear below this range tend to show speed fade and increased noise over time.

A zinc-rich anti-wear package provides protection for gears, pistons, and pump surfaces working under high load and tight clearances. Detergent chemistry helps limit varnish and deposit formation, which is important in commercial or high-hour residential use where fluid change intervals are often stretched. Cold flow remains acceptable for typical mowing climates, with pour points around −30°C.

This product is intended only for hydrostatic transmissions requiring SAE 20W-50. It is not suitable for engines, wet clutches, or lighter-viscosity systems.

Common compatible applications include:

  • Hustler, Toro, and Exmark zero-turn mowers
  • SCAG, Gravely, Ferris, and similar ZTRs
  • Any Hydro-Gear unit specifying SAE 20W-50 engine oil

Stens Shield 770-738 SAE 20W-50 Hydrostatic Transmission Fluid

Stens Shield SAE 20W-50 Hydrostatic Fluid

Stens Shield SAE 20W-50 Hydrostatic Fluid

Stens Shield 770-738 SAE 20W-50 is an OEM-compatible and aftermarket-equivalent hydrostatic transmission fluid for Hydro-Gear ZT-1800, ZT-2100, ZT-2200 (EZT), T1, T2, and T3HD transaxles that require SAE 20W-50.

The 20W-50 viscosity is critical for maintaining film strength and charge pressure once operating temperatures climb past 200°F, which is common in zero-turn mowers under sustained load. Fluids that thin too quickly can lead to speed loss, increased noise, and accelerated wear.

Stens Shield focuses on shear stability to help the oil stay within its intended viscosity range during long mowing sessions. Anti-wear additives protect high-pressure piston pumps and wheel motors operating with tight clearances, while oxidation and corrosion inhibitors help limit varnish, sludge, and internal rust during seasonal storage. It is designed for all-season use across typical mowing climates.

This product is intended only for hydrostatic transmissions specifying SAE 20W-50. It is not suitable for engines, wet clutches, or lighter-viscosity systems.

Common compatible applications include:

  • Hustler, Toro, and Exmark zero-turn mowers
  • SCAG, Gravely, Ferris, and similar ZTRs
  • Hydro-Gear units calling for SAE 20W-50 engine oil

Gravely SAE 15W-50 Hydrostatic & Engine Oil

Gravely 15W50 Synthetic Hydraulic Fluid

Gravely 15W50 Synthetic Hydraulic Fluid (5-Pack)

Gravely SAE 15W-50 Hydrostatic & Engine Oil is an OEM-compatible and aftermarket-equivalent lubricant for Hydro-Gear ZT-1800, ZT-2100, ZT-2200 (EZT), T1, T2, and T3HD transaxles that specify high-viscosity engine oil for hydrostatic operation.

This product is built on a heavy-duty petroleum base oil blend designed to handle the heat and load seen in zero-turn mower hydro drives. The 15W-50 viscosity provides strong film strength once operating temperatures climb, helping protect pumps, motors, and thrust surfaces from wear under continuous mowing. At 40°C, kinematic viscosity measures approximately 138 cSt, placing it firmly in the range Hydro-Gear expects for light- to mid-duty ZT units.

Unlike true hydraulic oils, this formulation is intended for systems engineered around engine-oil lubrication. Oxidation stability helps limit varnish and sludge formation during long service intervals, while corrosion inhibitors protect internal components during seasonal storage. Cold-start performance remains adequate for typical mowing climates without sacrificing high-temperature protection.

This oil may also be used in four-stroke mower engines where SAE 15W-50 is specified, but it is not suitable for CVTs, wet clutches, or lighter-viscosity hydro systems.

Additional compatible applications include:

  • Gravely zero-turn mowers
  • Hustler, Toro, and Exmark models specifying 15W-50
  • Other Hydro-Gear transaxles calling for high-viscosity engine oil

Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic 15W-50

Mobil 1 15W-50 is a fully synthetic aftermarket alternative for Hydro-Gear ZT-1800, ZT-2100, ZT-2200 (EZT), T1, T2, and T3HD transaxles.

An SAE 15W-50 viscosity provides robust protection under extreme operating conditions like high ambient temperatures, heavy loads, and extended mowing sessions. Its synthetic formulation resists thermal breakdown better than conventional oils, which matters when your transaxle is working hard on slopes or pulling attachments.

This oil meets API SN, SM, SL, and SJ specifications, along with ACEA A3/B3 standards. The high viscosity index of 160 means it maintains consistent protection across temperature ranges. With a pour point of -39°C, it flows well at startup even in cold weather.

While Mobil 1 15W-50 is marketed for high-performance engines, its properties align with what these Hydro-Gear units need: strong film strength, oxidation stability, and anti-wear protection. The 18 mm²/s kinematic viscosity at 100°C sits in the range these transaxles require.

Other compatible applications:

  • High-performance gasoline and diesel engines
  • Motorsports applications
  • Severe service conditions including towing

This is warranty-approved for Briggs & Stratton engines, though using it in Hydro-Gear transaxles falls outside that coverage.

Other compatible applications:

  • Briggs & Stratton Vanguard engines
  • Small engines requiring 15W-50 synthetic oil

Which Mowers Use the ZT-1800, ZT-2100, ZT-2200 (EZT), T1, T2, and T3HD?

The ZT-1800, ZT-2100, and ZT-2200 (EZT) transaxles are entry-level, maintenance-free units found in compact residential zero-turn mowers. These typically show up in machines priced under $3,000, with ground speeds below 6 MPH and smaller 6cc pumps.

The Hustler Turf Surfer Pro (available in 34″ and 48″ deck sizes) uses the ZT-1800. The BigDog Rex MP with its 34″ deck also runs the ZT-1800, with ground speeds up to 6 MPH.

ZT-2100 and ZT-2200 (EZT)

The ZT-2100 and ZT-2200 (EZT) use 10cc pumps and motors, 1″ axles, and internal filtration. These integrated units can reach speeds up to 7 MPH. The ZT-2200 is semi-serviceable with drain ports, which means you can change the fluid without replacing the entire unit.

The Exmark Quest E-Series, including models like the QZE722GKC50200, uses the ZT-2100. The Cub Cadet ZT1-50 (part of the RZT series) uses either the ZT-1800 or ZT-2200 depending on the configuration. Toro’s TimeCutter lineup and Gravely’s ZT X models run the ZT-2200 (EZT).

T1, T2, and T3HD

The T1, T2/T2-HP, and T3HD transaxles are lightweight units built for lawn tractors and garden riders rather than zero-turns. They feature 3/4″ axles, infinite speed control, and maintenance-free operation.

The T1 shows up in hydrostatic drive units like the Hydro-Gear 2010-1002. The T2 is found in machines like the Stiga Estate 6092 HW and some Husqvarna YTH20K46 models. The T3HD delivers up to 300 lb-ft intermittent torque capacity and offers optional full-locking differentials. Specific mower models using the T3HD aren’t well documented since manufacturers don’t always advertise which transaxle variant they’ve installed.

Closing Notes

Choosing the right oil is a hedge against the extra heat these built-in hydrostatic systems create. While it’s handy that some units can use engine oil, that overlap can also be a trap. Using common 10W-30 or a generic hydraulic fluid can cause air bubbles and sudden loss of drive (“speed fade”) once temperatures climb past about 200°F.

That’s why many manufacturers now recommend 15W-50 synthetic oils. They offer solid protection in both cold starts and high heat. Before changing oils or brands, check your exact model.

If you’re having doubts about the products listed above, you can try the OEM service kit. Just be sure to check your owner’s manual for compatibility.
