Not Every ISO 68 Grade Fluid is a Substitute for Vactra No. 2
ISO 68 tells you the oil’s viscosity, not its chemistry. A general-purpose ISO 68 hydraulic or motor oil lacks the additives that make a way oil functional on precision slideways. Using the wrong oil risks bearing wear, axis stiffness, and long-term accuracy loss.
Tackifiers give way oil its adhesive quality, allowing it to cling to vertical and horizontal surfaces instead of running off or getting wiped away. Without them, slow-moving ways run dry between lubrication cycles.

If the bottle is yellow, you likely received Mobil Velocity Oil No. 10, a thin spindle oil that lacks tackifiers and is not suitable for slideways. This mix-up is a known vendor error, so check before you fill.
If you are considering grease instead of oil for linear rails, some manufacturers do recommend it. Hiwin, for example, specifies Mobilux EP1 grease for certain linear rail applications. That said, switching between oil and grease without completely stripping and rebuilding the linear rail block is not recommended, as the two may not be chemically compatible.
