VW 509 00 Recommended Engine Oils: Aftermarket Alternatives

VW 509 00 is Volkswagen Group’s diesel-engine oil specification under their LongLife IV standard, introduced alongside VW 508 00. If 508 00 is the gasoline side of LongLife IV, 509 00 is the diesel equivalent. Both specs share the same core philosophy: ultra-low viscosity, low emissions impact, and extended drain intervals.

VW 509 00 is fixed at 0W-20, no other viscosity grade. 509 00 is a low-SAPS formulation, meaning it carries strictly limited levels of sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur (SAPS). Modern diesel emissions systems, particularly diesel particulate filters (DPF), are sensitive to these compounds. High-SAPS oils can clog or degrade those systems over time.

Valvoline European Vehicle Full Synthetic SAE 0W-20

Valvoline European Vehicle Full Synthetic SAE 0W-20 is an aftermarket equivalent approved under VW 508.00/509.00.

Quick Specs

  • Type: Full synthetic
  • HTHS: 2.7 cP
  • Pour Point: -39°C
  • Viscosity Index: 172

The viscosity index of 172 means this oil holds its grade well across temperature swings. Its HTHS of 2.7 clears the 509.00 minimum of 2.6 with a small margin, so film strength under load is covered.

Valvoline European Vehicle Full Synthetic is a straightforward pick if you want a widely available, formally approved alternative to dealer oil.

Motul 107384 Specific

Motul Specific 508 00 509 00 0W-20 is an aftermarket equivalent approved under VW 508.00/509.00, covering both gasoline and diesel Gen-5 VAG engines. It’s one of the few options with a TBN of 8.3, which sits comfortably above the spec minimum of 6.

Quick specs

  • Type: Full synthetic
  • HTHS: 2.5 mPa.s
  • Pour Point: -52°C
  • Viscosity Index: 179
  • TBN: 8.3 mg KOH/g
  • Sulfated Ash: 0.79% weight

The pour point of -52°C is notably low, making this a strong option for cold-climate operation.

This suits owners in colder climates or those running their vehicles year-round in variable conditions. If TBN headroom matters to you for extended drain intervals, the 8.3 rating gives you more buffer than the spec requires.

AMALIE Elixir 0W-20 Full Synthetic Euro Mid Saps

Amalie Elixir Euro Mid SAPS Full Synthetic 0W-20 is an aftermarket equivalent approved under VW 508.00/509.00, covering both gasoline and diesel Gen-5 VAG engines.

Quick specs

  • HTHS: >2.7 cP
  • Pour Point: -42°C
  • Viscosity Index: 175
  • TBN: >9.0 mg KOH/g
  • Sulfated Ash: 0.75% mass
  • Noack Volatility: 9.5%

The TBN headroom here is useful if you’re pushing drain intervals. The Noack volatility of 9.5% is also worth noting: lower volatility means less oil burning off at high temperatures, which helps with consumption between changes. HTHS exceeds 2.7, clearing the spec minimum with margin.

LIQUI MOLY Top Tec 6200 SAE 0W-20

Liqui Moly Top Tec 6200 0W-20 is an aftermarket equivalent approved under VW 508.00/509.00, for gasoline and diesel Gen-5 VAG engines equipped with particulate filters. It carries one of the higher TBN figures in this spec category at 9.2 mg KOH/g.

  • Type: Full synthetic
  • HTHS: ≥2.6 mPas
  • Pour Point: -45°C
  • Viscosity Index: 180
  • TBN: 9.2 mg KOH/g
  • Sulfated Ash: ≤0.8%
  • Noack Volatility: 10.5%

The viscosity index of 180 is the highest among the options covered here, meaning this oil maintains its grade across a wider temperature range than most competitors in the spec. The pour point of -45°C also puts it near the top for cold-start performance.

Liqui Moly Top Tec 6200 0W-20 is a practical choice for owners running TSI, TFSI, or TDI engines who want strong TBN reserves and cold-weather capability.

Mannol Longlife 508/509 0W-20

Mannol Full synthetic premium engine oil for the latest models of Volkswagen turbocharged gasoline - 0W-20 (1L)

Mannol Full synthetic premium engine oil

Mannol Longlife 508/509 0W-20 is an aftermarket equivalent for gasoline and diesel Gen-5 VAG engines equipped with GPF or DPF particulate filters.

It’s one of the few options in this spec category built on a PAO (polyalphaolefin) synthetic base, which generally offers better thermal stability and lower volatility than conventional Group IV synthetics.

Most 508/509 oils use Group IV or Group IV/V blends; a dedicated PAO formulation typically holds viscosity more consistently under sustained heat and resists oxidation longer. Detailed HTHS, TBN, and pour point figures aren’t published in the available datasheet, so direct comparison against other options on those metrics isn’t possible.

Mannol Longlife 508/509 0W-20 is worth considering for owners who prioritize base oil quality and are running extended drain intervals on TSI, TFSI, or TDI engines.

TRIAX Euro LV 0W-20 Full Synthetic European Car Engine Oil | 15K Miles | Compatible with BMW LL-12+, LL-17+, MB 229.71, VW 508.00/509.00 (5 Quart)

TRIAX Euro LV 0W-20 Full Synthetic

TRIAX Euro LV 0W-20 is a PAO/Ester-based full synthetic positioned as a compatible option for Gen-5 VAG engines requiring VW 508.00/509.00, though as of the December 2023 datasheet, the VW approval was still pending.

Quick Specs

  • Type: Full synthetic (PAO/Ester)
  • HTHS: >2.60 cP
  • Pour Point: -54°C
  • Viscosity Index: 176
  • Sulfated Ash: <1.0%

The pour point of -54°C is the lowest among the options covered here. The PAO/Ester base also gives it good shear stability and low volatility. HTHS meets the spec minimum but the datasheet doesn’t give a specific value beyond >2.60, so there’s no way to gauge margin without independent testing.

If the VW approval has since been granted, this becomes a more straightforward recommendation for owners in cold climates running turbocharged TSI or TDI engines.

VW 509 00 vs 507 00

VW 504 00 / 507 00 (LongLife III) is the direct predecessor of 509. Those are mid-SAPS oils, typically 0W-30 or 5W-30, with a minimum HTHS of 3.5. The jump from 3.5 to 2.6 is significant. You’re trading some of that shear protection for better fuel efficiency and emissions compliance.

Going further back, VW 502 00 / 505 00 are full-SAPS specs with no phosphorus or sulfur limits, usually in 0W-40 or 5W-40 viscosities. These are a different category entirely.

VW 508 00 / 509 00 oils are NOT backward compatible. Using them in engines not designed for 0W-20 risks irreversible damage. The oil pumps and clearances in older engines weren’t built for oil this thin.

Which vehicles require VW 509 00

This spec applies to Gen-5 engines from the Volkswagen Group, generally starting with 2018 and 2019 model years:

  • Volkswagen: 2019+ Golf GTI (DKFA motor), Tiguan, Jetta GLI
  • Audi: 2023 A4, 2020+ SQ5
  • SEAT / CUPRA: 2022 Ibiza FR, Formentor
  • Porsche: Vehicles requiring the C20 specification also approve 509 00

If your vehicle is equipped with a gasoline particulate filter (GPF), it almost certainly falls under 508 00 or 509 00 territory. Additionally, these engines use variable displacement oil pumps specifically sized to maintain adequate pressure with 0W-20. That’s why running thicker oil from an older spec isn’t safe.

Closing Notes

VW 509 00 isn’t just thinner oil. It reflects a deliberate engineering decision to treat the lubricant as a functional engine component, one that works in coordination with precision-machined tolerances and advanced metallurgy rather than compensating for them.

The fuel economy and CO2 benefits get most of the attention, but the more practical advantage is cold-start behavior. A 0W-20 reaches variable timing components and turbo bearings in the first seconds after startup faster than any 5W-40 ever could. That’s where most engine wear actually happens, and that’s what this spec is engineered around.

One detail worth knowing: factory-fill 508/509 oils often carry a distinctive dye that functions as a compliance marker. If a workshop swaps in a non-approved, thicker oil, the color change makes it visible. It’s a straightforward way to protect warranty integrity on both sides.
