Recommended Oil For Ariens Snowblower Engines

Most Ariens snowblowers run on 5W-30 synthetic blend or full synthetic oil. This grade works best because it flows well and protects the engine in cold winter weather.

Some engines can technically use 10W-30. But 5W-30 is the better choice because it helps the engine start more easily when temperatures drop below freezing. If you want to compare 5W-30 vs 10W-30 viscosity, 5W-30 flows better in winter weather.

Ariens Snowblower Oil Capacity

The right amount of oil depends on the engine’s size (measured in cc) and who made it. Since each engine has its own oil requirement, always check your engine manual to get the exact number. That said, here are typical capacities to give you a general idea.

For Ariens AX series engines:

  • 99cc: 12 oz
  • 136cc, 208cc, 223cc: 16 oz
  • 254cc: 20 oz
  • 291cc, 306cc: 32 oz (one full quart)
  • 369cc, 414cc: 38 oz

For other engine brands used in Ariens machines:

  • Briggs & Stratton: about 19 oz for smaller 205cc–250cc engines, up to 38 oz for large 420cc engines
  • Subaru: 20 oz for 169cc engines, 37 oz for 265cc engines
  • Tecumseh: 21 oz for older models like the LH195, up to 28 oz for larger models like the OH358

How to Change Oil

If you don’t know your engine’s exact capacity, a safe approach is to start with about 20 ounces. Then, add small amounts while checking the dipstick.

Don’t overfill the engine.

Too much oil lets the crankshaft churn it into foam instead of letting it flow smoothly. That foam can’t lubricate the engine properly, which can lead to overheating or even seizure.

The extra oil also builds up pressure inside the engine, which can blow out gaskets and seals and cause leaks.

For an accurate reading, most Ariens manuals say to screw the dipstick in all the way, then pull it out to check the oil level.

Oil Change Frequency for Ariens Snow Blowers

How often you change the oil depends on whether the engine is new or already broken in.

For a new engine, change the oil early to clear out the small metal particles it sheds during break-in. Most recommendations call for this first change somewhere between 1 and 5 hours of use.

For regular maintenance, most sources recommend changing the oil once a year. Most homeowners schedule their oil change usually at the end of the season before storage; or at the start of winter.

If you use the machine heavily, a common rule is to change it every 25 to 50 hours of use. Even with light use, an annual change is still a good idea, since oil can pick up moisture and contaminants over time even when the machine isn’t running much.

A good practice is to change the oil while the engine is still warm. Warm oil drains better and carries more contaminants out with it. Check your specific engine manual to confirm this applies to your model.

Ariens SAE 5W-30 Sno-Thro Engine Oil and Gear Lube

The OEM combo: Ariens SAE 5W-30 Sno-Thro Engine Oil and Gear Lube

Ariens snowblowers use engines from several different manufacturers depending on the model and year. Modern Sno-Thro models commonly use the Ariens AX series, which is made by LCT (Liquid Combustion Technology).

Briggs & Stratton engines appear across a wide range of Ariens units, from 205cc to 420cc. Subaru engines show up in some models at 169cc or 265cc.

Tecumseh engines are mostly found on older models like the 924 series. Kawasaki appears on some professional-grade configurations. If you own a mower powered by the FR730v, you might be interested in checking the Kawasaki FR730V’s oil type and capacity.

If you have stored your snowblower for the off-season, start by draining any gas older than six months. Refill with fresh, ethanol-free fuel. If the engine still won’t start, pull the carburetor’s float bowl and spray it out with carb cleaner.

Check the spark plug for wear and make sure the wire is reconnected. Before the first run, remove the wheels and grease the axle shafts, augers, and tractor gears.

Check your oil level on the dipstick. If you ran the carb dry before storage, prime it a few times and pull the cord to draw fresh fuel in. Finally, look over the belts and shear bolts. Shear bolts are meant to break if the auger hits something solid, so replace any that are damaged before heading out.
