Ford WSS-M2C947-A Equivalent: 0W-20 Oil Recommendations

WSS-M2C947-A is Ford’s specification for 0W-20 synthetic motor oil, part of a broader series of weight-specific standards Ford uses to define oil requirements across its lineup.

Oils meeting this standard are fully synthetic and align with API SN and ILSAC GF-5 performance levels

This standard was later superseded by WSS-M2C947-B1, which was developed to address Low Speed Pre-Ignition.

LSPI is a combustion event that can cause catastrophic internal damage in turbocharged gasoline direct injection engines, including Ford’s EcoBoost lineup. It occurs when the air-fuel mixture ignites before the spark plug fires, generating pressure spikes the engine isn’t designed to absorb.

WSS-M2C947-A was aligned with API SN and ILSAC GF-5, standards that predate formal LSPI testing requirements.

When API SN Plus was developed to specifically address LSPI, Ford updated the spec to WSS-M2C947-B1. The B1 revision also introduced stricter timing chain wear testing.

If your vehicle originally called for 947-A, an oil meeting 947-B1 is backward-compatible and safe to use. Both specifications have largely been superseded by WSS-M2C962-A1, which aligns with API SP and ILSAC GF-6A. That standard sets even higher benchmarks for timing chain wear and LSPI protection than either of the 947-series specs.

Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 0W-20 Motor Oil (5-Quart, Case of 3)

Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-20 is one of the few aftermarket-equivalent oils that explicitly lists both Ford WSS-M2C947-A and WSS-M2C947-B1 on its datasheet.

Pennzoil uses a natural gas-derived synthetic base through their PurePlus process to minimize impurities. In practice, that translates to a cleaner oil that resists sludge formation.

Quick Specs

  • Viscosity: SAE 0W-20
  • KV100: 8.8 cSt | KV40: 46.3 cSt
  • Pour point: -48°C
  • CCS at -35°C: 5,670 cP
  • Viscosity Index: 172
  • Flash point: 208°C

The -48°C pour point is the strongest cold-start figure in this group. If you’re in a cold climate and running an EcoBoost, that number matters when you turn the key in the ignition.

Specifications that Replaced WSS-M2C947-A

WSS-M2C947-A has gone through two successors, each driven by a specific engine protection problem that the previous spec didn’t fully address.

The first update was WSS-M2C947-B1, Ford’s response to Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI). The B1 revision aligned with API SN Plus, which introduced formal LSPI testing requirements and stricter timing chain wear standards not present in the original spec.

The current standard is WSS-M2C962-A1, introduced in May 2020 alongside Ford’s broader 96x-A1 spec series. It reflects the move to API SP and ILSAC GF-6A, setting even higher benchmarks for LSPI protection and timing chain wear than B1. For 0W-20 applications, 962-A1 is what you’ll find on newer Ford vehicles, including the 2023 Maverick.

If your vehicle originally requires 947-A, an oil meeting 947-B1 or 962-A1 is backwards compatible and exceeds the original requirement on every meaningful performance criteria.

Closing Notes

The move from 947-A to 947-B1 to 962-A1 addressed a real failure mode that the previous standard wasn’t equipped to handle.

Meeting the spec is the baseline. For owners who tow regularly or run in stop-and-go traffic, two numbers are worth attention beyond the label.

Shear stability determines whether the oil holds its rated viscosity grade under sustained turbocharger stress. NOACK volatility measures evaporation at high temperature. Lower evaporation means fewer oil vapors entering the intake. This is important for valve cleanliness in direct-injection engines where carbon buildup is a known long-term problem.

For most owners, a 962-A1 approved oil at Ford’s recommended intervals is sufficient. If you’re pushing the engine harder, shorten your oil change interval.
