Ford M2C 134-D Equivalent: Specs & Recommended Fluids

Ford M2C 134-D is an old Ford OEM specification for what is now broadly referred to as Universal Tractor Transmission Fluid (UTTF). It defines a multi-purpose, multigrade fluid engineered for farm equipment where a single shared reservoir handles the transmission, hydraulics, differential, final drive gears, and wet brakes simultaneously.

Equivalent and Related Standards

If you’re looking for the current equivalent of M2C 134-D, that’s NH-410B.

Ford New Holland went through several ownership changes before becoming part of Case New Holland (CNH), and the specification was renamed and updated along the way.

The direct successor to M2C 134-D under New Holland is NH-410B, with Ambra Multi-G 134 being the primary branded fluid built to that spec.

CNH later introduced MAT 3525, a more modern specification considered interchangeable with M2C 134-D, followed by MAT 3540 (Ultraction), which is the current CNH specification and has superseded both the 134-D and Multi-G formulations.

On the John Deere side, J20C (Hy-Gard) is widely regarded by experts as the guiding specification for traditional UTFs and is essentially equivalent to M2C 134-D.

M2C 134-D is backwards compatible with its earlier revisions, meaning it meets and exceeds the requirements of the A, B, and C versions. Many brands also produce fluids that satisfy 134-D alongside other industry standards, including Kubota UDT, Massey Ferguson M-1135/1141/1143/1145, and Case MS-1207/1209.

Duragard Diamond Plate Universal Trans/Hydraulic Synthetic Blend Fluid

Duragard Synthetic Blend Universal Hydraulic Tractor Fluid - 5 Gallon Pail

Duragard Synthetic Blend Universal Hydraulic Tractor Fluid

Duragard Universal Trans/Hydraulic Synthetic Blend Fluid is a premium multipurpose aftermarket equivalent for Ford M2C134A/B/C/D and John Deere J20C specifications.

This synthetic blend is engineered to deliver synthetic-like performance and superior low-temperature fluidity at a more accessible price point than full synthetics.

Quick Specs:

  • Viscosity: 61.05 cSt @ 40°C / 9.747 cSt @ 100°C
  • Viscosity Index: 144
  • Pour Point: -42°C (-44°F)
  • Color: Orange (Dyed for easy identification)

If you’ve ever struggled with sluggish equipment response or filter plugging in extreme cold, this fluid is the solution. The VHVI (Very High Viscosity Index) paraffinic base oils provide high-temperature film strength that conventional Group-I oils cannot match.

It dramatically reduces wear on bearings and gears while maintaining even power transmission across a wide temperature range.

Duragard Universal is the ideal match for fleet managers or owner-operators looking to reduce inventory by using one high-performance fluid that meets the strict anti-wear requirements of modern systems, including those calling for Kubota Super UDT-2.

Additional Compatibility:

  • John Deere: J20C, J20A, J21A, J14C, 303
  • Case/New Holland: MS-1209, 1210, 1207, 1204

Mobilfluid 424

MOBIL FLUID 424 High Performance Tractor Hydraulic Fluid - 5 Gal Pail

MOBIL FLUID 424 High Performance Tractor Hydraulic Fluid

Mobilfluid 424 is a aftermarket equivalent UTTF from ExxonMobil that meets Ford New Holland ESN-M2C 134-D.

Quick Specs

  • Viscosity: 55 cSt @ 40°C / 9.3 cSt @ 100°C
  • Viscosity Index: 145
  • Pour Point: -42°C
  • Flash Point: 198°C

The shared-reservoir setup on older Ford and New Holland tractors is demanding because the same fluid has to satisfy gears, hydraulics, and wet brakes at once. Mobilfluid 424 handles that through a friction modifier package specifically tuned for wet brake and PTO chatter.

The viscosity index of 145 sits above the typical 136-140 range for this spec category. This means the fluid has better cold-flow behavior without sacrificing film strength at operating temperature.

Mobil 424 is a practical choice for owners of older Ford and New Holland gear-drive tractors who want a widely available, name-brand alternative to OEM fluid without moving up to a modern synthetic.

Compatible specifications include:

  • CNH MAT 3505, 3525
  • John Deere J20C
  • Kubota UDT
  • Massey Ferguson M-1135, M-1141
  • JI Case MS-1204/07/09
  • API GL-4
  • Caterpillar TO-2
  • Allison C-4 (agriculture applications only)

Why Some Operators Interchange M2C 134-D, NH-410B, and J20C

M2C 134-D, NH-410B, and J20C are closely related because they all define a premium universal fluid built around the same core requirements.

All three are engineered for multipurpose functionality, meaning the same fluid must simultaneously satisfy the needs of gears (which require anti-wear additives), hydraulics (which require good pumpability), and wet brakes (which require specific friction modifiers).

These specs share a similar viscosity profile, typically a 10W-30 equivalent with a high viscosity index in the 136 to 140 range. This viscosity profile allows the fluid to flow reliably in extreme cold while retaining enough body to protect components under high heat.

Anti-wear performance is generally at API GL-4 level, using extreme pressure (EP) additives to prevent metal-to-metal contact in heavy-duty gear sets. All three also include friction modifiers specifically tuned to keep wet brake operation smooth and eliminate brake chatter or squawking.

Closing Note

Universal tractor fluids are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb moisture from the air. In a shared-reservoir system, this matters more because seasonal temperature swings accelerate condensation buildup. The first signs show up as milky fluid, sluggish hydraulic response, and wet brake chatter.

A synthetic blend with an extended drain rating will not save you from this if the equipment sits idle in unheated storage. Stick to hour-based intervals regardless of what the label claims.

During every drain, check the magnetic plug for fine metal particles. That is your most reliable real-world indicator of whether the fluid’s EP additive package is keeping up with your gearbox loads.
