Cummins CES 20086 Equivalent: Approved Engine Oil Recommendations

CES 20086 is Cummins’ specification for medium- and heavy-duty diesel engines running on Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) and equipped with modern aftertreatment systems like Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR).

CES 20086 meets API CK-4 and Tier 4 Final emissions standards in North America, along with Stage IIIB through V off-highway standards in Europe. It’s backward compatible with CES 20081 and the full CJ-4 lineage.

OIls that meet CES 20086 usually have these viscosity grades: 15W-40, 10W-40, 10W-30, 5W-30, and 5W-40. Most are formulated on API Group II or Group III base oils.

If you’re unsure how these multigrades compare in real-world operation, it helps to understand the differences between 10W-30 and 5W-30 engine oil viscosity.

CES 20086 and CES 20087 were introduced alongside 2017 emissions standards, but they serve different purposes.

CES 20086 covers a wide viscosity range, handles higher heat loads, and works across legacy and modern Cummins architectures. CES 20087 is purpose-built for fuel economy in specific newer engines. It delivers efficiency gains in engines designed for it, but it’s not appropriate for engines that weren’t.

CES 20087 is primarily available in 10W-30 and should only be used when the owner’s manual explicitly calls for it. For most Cummins applications, 20086 is the correct choice, especially for engines like the 6.7L Cummins used in modern heavy-duty trucks.

Below are several widely available engine oils that meet the Cummins CES 20086 specification. Check Amazon pricing too, you may find better deals than at your local store.

Valvoline Premium Blue One Solution 15W-40

Valvoline Premium Blue One Solution SAE 15W-40 Diesel Engine Oil 1 GA

Valvoline Premium Blue SAE 15W-40 Diesel Engine Oil

Valvoline Premium Blue One Solution is Cummins’ only exclusively endorsed and recommended OEM oil for CES 20086. If you run a Cummins X15, this unlocks a 5,000-mile drain interval extension that no other oil qualifies for.

Quick Specs

  • Viscosity: SAE 15W-40
  • HTHS @ 150°C: 4.2 cP
  • Sulfated Ash: 0.9% mass
  • Noack Volatility: 11%
  • Pour Point: -33°C
  • TBN: 11 meq KOH/g

The drain interval extension is the practical reason most Cummins X15 operators choose this over other CK-4 compliant oils. It also covers diesel, natural gas, and gasoline engines under a single SKU, which reduces the risk of grabbing the wrong oil in a multi-equipment operation.

This is the right choice for buyers who prefer the OEM choice, running Cummins X15 engines who want maximum drain intervals and zero warranty ambiguity.

Shell Rotella T5 15W-40

Shell Rotella T5 Synthetic Blend 15W-40 Diesel Engine Oil, 1 Gallon

Shell Rotella T5 Synthetic Blend 15W-40 Diesel Oil

Shell Rotella T5 15W-40 is a CES 20086-approved aftermarket equivalent and one of the most widely available synthetic blend options for Cummins diesel engines.

Quick Specs

  • Viscosity: SAE 15W-40
  • KV @ 100°C: 14.9 mm²/s
  • Sulfated Ash: 1.0% mass
  • TBN: 10 meq KOH/g
  • Pour Point: -37°C
  • Viscosity Index: 138

Rotella T5 sits at the practical middle ground between conventional and full synthetic. The synthetic blend base improves cold-start performance over straight mineral oils without the price premium of a full synthetic. Sulfated ash sits right at the 1.0% ceiling, so it meets the spec but leaves no margin. Operators running DPF-equipped engines in high-load cycles may want to note that.

It’s a solid choice for budget-conscious operators who want a name-brand, widely stocked oil that meets CES 20086 without paying for full synthetic price.

Chevron Delo 400 XLE SB 15W-40

Delo 400 XLE Heavy Duty Synblend Diesel Engine Oil 15W-40, 1 Gallon, Pack of 1

Delo 400 XLE Heavy Duty Synblend

Delo 400 XLE is a CES 20086-approved aftermarket equivalent built for mixed fleets and operators looking to stretch drain intervals without moving to full synthetic.

Quick Specs

  • Viscosity: SAE 15W-40
  • HTHS @ 150°C: 4.2 mPa.s
  • Sulfated Ash: 1.0% mass
  • TBN: 8.0 mgKOH/g
  • Pour Point: -39°C
  • Viscosity Index: 141

Chevron rates Delo 400 XLE for up to 1.5x the OEM standard interval. The TBN of 8.0 is lower than Valvoline’s Premium Blue at 11, which is worth noting if you’re pushing those extended intervals hard.

It also carries Allison TES-439 approval, covering both the engine and drivetrain under one product. This is a solid pick for small-scale fleet operators and landscapers who want a cost-effective, widely available CES 20086 oil.

Castrol Vecton Long Drain 10W-30 CK-4

Castrol Vecton Long Drain 10W-30 CK-4 Part Synthetic Diesel Engine Oil, 1 Gallon Jug

Castrol Vecton Long Drain 10W-30

A CES 20086-approved aftermarket equivalent in a 10W-30 viscosity grade, aimed at operators running extended drain programs with used oil analysis.

Quick Specs

  • Viscosity: SAE 10W-30
  • KV @ 100°C: 12.16 cSt
  • Sulfated Ash: 0.95% mass
  • TBN: 10.69 mgKOH/g
  • Pour Point: -39°C
  • Viscosity Index: 143

The 10W-30 grade is the practical differentiator here. It flows better at cold start than 15W-40 options, which matters in colder climates or for equipment that sits overnight. The TBN of 10.69 holds up well at extended intervals, and Castrol rates this for up to 80,000 miles or 1,000 hours, though that figure requires an active used oil analysis program. Don’t treat it as a set-and-forget number.

This is a good fit for technical buyers who want a lower-viscosity CES 20086 option, run oil analysis, and want documented drain interval data to back up their maintenance decisions.

Shell Rotella T6 15W-40

Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic 15W-40 Diesel Engine Oil, 1 Gallon

Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic 15W-40

Shell Rotella T6 15W-40 is a CES 20086-approved oil. You can think of it as the full synthetic version of the T5.

Quick Specs

  • Viscosity: SAE 15W-40
  • KV @ 100°C: 14.9 mm²/s
  • Sulfated Ash: 1.0% mass
  • TBN: 10.2 mgKOH/g
  • Pour Point: -51°C
  • Flash Point: 233°C

T6 is fully synthetic, which gives it meaningfully better shear stability and oxidation resistance over the T5 synthetic blend. The pour point of -51°C also stands out for a 15W-40, making it a practical choice for operations in colder climates where most 15W-40 oils would struggle at cold start.

This is the right pick for operators who want a full synthetic CES 20086 oil.

Also approved for:

  • API CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CI-4, CH-4
  • Allison TES-439
  • Caterpillar ECF-2, ECF-3
  • Detroit Diesel DFS 93K222, 93K218
  • Mack EOS-4.5

How to Tell if an Oil Meets CES 20086

Ideally, you want a product that explicitly states compliance with CES 20086. But if you can’t find one at your local store, here’s how to find alternative engine oils.

Check the API donut first

Flip the container over and find the API Service Symbol on the back. The upper half needs to read CK-4. That’s the North American standard that aligns directly with CES 20086.

Confirm the viscosity grade

The center of the donut lists the viscosity. For CES 20086, acceptable grades are 15W-40, 10W-40, 10W-30, and 5W-30.

Look for cross-approvals

Compliant oils typically carry approvals from multiple OEMs simultaneously. Look for Volvo VDS-4.5, Mack EOS-4.5, Detroit Diesel DFS 93K222, and Caterpillar ECF-3 on the label or data sheet. These approvals cluster together because the chemistry required to meet them overlaps heavily with CES 20086.

Verify the chemical limits

If you have access to the technical data sheet, check two numbers: sulfated ash at or below 1.0% by weight, and HTHS viscosity at 150°C at or above 3.5 cP.

Check for CES 20081 successor language

Any oil explicitly marketed as a replacement or upgrade for CES 20081 (API CJ-4) will typically comply with 20086, since 20086 is the official successor spec.

Closing Note

Choosing a CES 20086 oil comes down to how the engine is actually used.

Fleets running steady highway miles may prioritize drain interval capability. Equipment operating under sustained heavy load may benefit more from higher HTHS stability and oxidation resistance. The right oil is the one that matches both the specification and the real operating pattern of the engine.

Treat CES 20086 as the baseline. Then select the formulation and viscosity grade that fits the conditions your engine sees every day.
