Mixing CHF-11S and CHF-202
CHF-11S and CHF-202 are fully compatible and can be mixed without harming your BMW’s hydraulic system. Both are synthetic hydraulic fluids with similar formulations designed for central hydraulic systems like power steering, level control, and hydro-pneumatic suspensions.
While 11S and 202 are interchangeable, neither should ever be mixed with CHF 7.1. CHF 7.1 is an older mineral-based fluid that’s incompatible with the synthetic 11S or 202. Mixing them will cause system problems.
If your BMW requires CHF-11S (like an E90 with the N52 engine) and the reservoir is low, you can safely top it off with CHF-202. The reverse is also true.

Do NOT Mix ATF & CHF-11S
Don’t mix CHF-11S with ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid). The two fluids use different additive packages and base oil formulations that aren’t compatible with each other. Mixing can result in seal damage.
CHF-11S systems use seals engineered for synthetic hydraulic fluid chemistry. ATF’s additives can cause those seals to swell, warp, or shrink, leading to leaks at the steering rack. If the rack seals fail, you’re looking at around $1,800 in parts and labor to replace it.
Mixing fluids also degrades cold-weather performance. CHF-11S is formulated to flow at -40°C so your pump doesn’t strain during winter starts. ATF thickens more aggressively in cold temperatures, forcing the pump and belt to work harder. You might also hear whining noises from the pump as it struggles with the contaminated mixture.
Don’t keep driving with mixed fluid. Even a small amount of ATF contaminates the system. Some people have successfully switched to synthetic ATF in older vehicles, but they did it properly: complete system flush, sometimes a new pump, and zero mixing between fluid types.
Here’s what to do: flush the entire power steering system to remove the contaminated fluid, then refill with the correct CHF-11S fluid or a compatible alternative like CHF 202 or febi 06161.
