ASTM D6210 Heavy-Duty Coolant Guide: Specs & Alternatives

ASTM D6210 is the industry standard specification for fully-formulated glycol-based engine coolants built for heavy-duty engines. It covers both ethylene and propylene glycol formulations, in concentrated and prediluted forms. This standard sets the baseline requirements for protection against corrosion, cavitation, freezing, and boiling coolants.

ASTM D6210 is maintained by ASTM International, formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials, through its Committee D15 on Engine Coolants and Related Fluids.

Manufacturers & OEMs Requiring ASTM D6210

A broad range of OEMs either require or accept coolants that meet this spec. Caterpillar explicitly lists ASTM D6210 as an acceptable specification for commercial heavy-duty antifreeze. John Deere approves D6210-compliant coolants as alternatives when their proprietary COOL-GARD is unavailable, both in 50% prediluted and 40-60% concentrate forms.

Cummins-registered products like Zerex HD Nitrite Free ELC, which meet Cummins CES-14603, are also formulated to conform to D6210.

Certain LS Tractors models, including the MT335H, specifically call out ASTM D6210 by name in their equipment manuals.

Beyond individual OEMs, coolants meeting this spec are widely used in mixed fleets covering Ford Motorcraft applications, Chrysler, Detroit Diesel, Mack, Freightliner, PACCAR, Volvo, and GM Heavy Truck.

Compatible Alternatives for ASTM D6210 Coolant

The following coolants all meet ASTM D6210 and represent the range of formulations available. These recommendations run from OEM-spec products to aftermarket equivalents built for mixed fleets, extended drain intervals, and modern aluminum-heavy engines.

Shell Rotella ELC Nitrite Free Pre-Diluted 50/50

Shell Rotella Nitrite-Free Extended Life ELC Anti-Freeze + Coolant, Pre-Diluted 50/50, 1 Gallon

Shell Rotella Nitrite-Free Extended Life ELC, Pre-Diluted 50/50

A fully formulated aftermarket equivalent that meets ASTM D6210, Shell Rotella ELC NF Pre-Diluted 50/50 is a ready-to-use OAT coolant built for commercial and mixed fleet use.

It covers heavy-duty diesels, gasoline, and natural gas engines without requiring SCAs or an Extender at any point in its service life.

Quick Specs

Type: OAT (Organic Acid Technology), nitrite-free
Freeze protection: -34°F / -37°C
Boilover protection: +265°F / +129°C (with 103.4 kPa pressure cap)
pH: 8.3
Service life: Up to 600,000 miles or 12,000 hours (commercial); 150,000 miles (light duty)

The nitrite-free formulation sets this coolant apart. Nitrite protects iron components against cavitation but degrades aluminum in modern high-temperature engines.

Shell Rotella ELC skips nitrite entirely, making it a direct fit for aluminum-heavy engines and brazed aluminum heat exchangers without compatibility concerns.

This product is ideal for fleet operators or owner-operators running mixed equipment who want a single coolant that covers heavy and light duty in one bottle, pre-diluted and ready to use with no SCA management required.

Cat Extended Life Coolant (ELC)

CAT 238-8648 Extended Life Coolant 50/50 Premix - Red (1 Gallon)

CAT 238-8648 Extended Life Coolant 50/50 Premix

Cat Extended Life Coolant is the OEM coolant for Caterpillar engines and meets ASTM D6210 for heavy-duty applications. It uses carboxylate-based Mopar-compatible OAT chemistry(free of silicates, phosphates, borates, and amines) and requires no SCAs at initial fill or during service, with one midlife addition of Cat Extender required.

Type: OAT (Organic Acid Technology), nitrited
Freeze protection: -34°F / -37°C (50% premixed)
Boilover protection: 265°F / 129°C
pH: 8.3
Service life: 12,000 hours with SOS analysis
Part number: 238-8648 (1 Gallon, 50/50 Premix)

The one maintenance requirement, that of adding Cat Extender at coolant midlife, replaces the SCA additions required every 250 hours with conventional coolants. The premixed formula contains a bittering agent to prevent accidental ingestion.

This is the right choice for Caterpillar equipment owners who want full EC-1 compliance and OEM warranty coverage, or fleet operators running mixed equipment who want a single coolant without managing SCA schedules.

Star Tron Star-Cool Premium Synthetic PG Coolant

Star Tron Star-Cool Premium Synthetic PG Engine Coolant + Antifreeze - Propylene Glycol for Engines, Motorcycles, Snowmobiles & Marine - 1 GAL (033200)

Star Tron Star-Cool Premium Synthetic PG

Star Tron Star-Cool is an aftermarket equivalent that meets ASTM D6210. It is formulated on a propylene glycol (PG) base rather than the ethylene glycol found in most heavy-duty coolants. It uses Poly Organic Additives Technology (POAT) with a PCT additive package and arrives pre-mixed with deionized water.

Quick Specs

Type: POAT, nitrite-free
Base fluid: Propylene glycol
Freeze protection: -26°F / -32°C
Boilover protection: 265°F / 129°C (with 15 psi cap)
Flash point: 265°F
Service life (gasoline): 2+ years / 250,000 miles / 4,000 hours
Service life (diesel): 7+ years / 750,000 miles / 12,500–15,000 hours

The propylene glycol base is the key distinction here. PG is non-toxic and biodegradable, which is critical in marine, agricultural, and enclosed environments where ethylene glycol spills pose a risk to animals and groundwater.

This is a fit for boat owners, powersports, and light industrial applications where environmental safety is a priority alongside engine protection.

Extender interval: 300,000 miles / 3 years / 6,000 hours

Most OAT coolants lose their extended-life properties when mixed beyond 10–20% with conventional coolants. Final Charge can be mixed in any proportion with other coolants without compromising corrosion protection, though keeping contamination below 25% is still recommended to maintain full service life.

Peak Final Charge is a practical choice for fleet operators who can’t always control what’s already in a system and need a coolant with some tolerance for mixing.

Closing Notes

The shift toward ASTM D6210 and nitrite-free OAT chemistry reflects a real change in how heavy-duty engines are built. Lighter alloys, tighter tolerances, and brazed aluminum heat exchangers don’t respond well to the inhibitor packages that protected older iron-heavy systems. The coolant has had to keep up.

For a long time, cooling system maintenance meant manual SCA testing and scheduled additive charges. The operator caught what the fluid couldn’t hold on its own. Modern OAT formulations change that relationship. The chemistry carries the load across longer intervals without intervention, but only if the right fluid is in the system to begin with.

That’s what makes fluid selection matter more now than it did before. Picking a D6210-compliant coolant is a choice about what’s protecting your engine’s internal surfaces at the molecular level, every hour it runs.
